The recipient of this scholarship will receive a $1,000 scholarship paid directly to the junior college or university of his/her choice.

Sigma Beta Club of Starkville Scholarship

 

Late one fall semester, the Theta Iota Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., under the leadership of Bro. Dederick Daugherty, had performed numerous hours of voluntary service to assist the youth at the Oktibbeha County Boy & Girls Club. They were then presented with the idea of re-chartering the Sigma Beta Club back to the community of Starkville. As months passed by, Bro. Dederick Daugherty, Bro. Johnie Cooks, Bro. Ashley Hereford, and Bro. Bobby Sims met tirelessly, planning and laying the foundation for what's to come.

 

At the beginning of January, the Mississippi State University undergraduate chapter of Phi Beta Sigma sponsored a membership drive to start the Sigma Beta Club. From that, 60 young men responded to the call, but only 23 stayed and took a bold step towards manhood, becoming affiliated with the big brothers of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. On March 20, 2003, they became the charter members of the Sigma Beta Club of Starkville, Mississippi. These young men will be forever known as the

During the charter line's first year, they were the center of attention in the community. They quickly gained the respect of Starkville High School and Armstrong Jr. High School. The 23 Unbreakable Chains of Blue and White conducted numerous community service projects, including tutoring at the local Boys & Girls Club, as well as projects with A-Dopt-A- Highway, Starkville nursing homes, and Starkville Humane Society.

 

Application Requirements:

Applicants will be required to submit a 2-4 minute video presentation answering the following question.

 

A mind is a terrible thing to waste. What does this statement mean to you?

 

Please include the following in your response:

  • Introduction. Tell us your name, where you are from, your current high school, and where you plan to attend college.
  • Response. A mind is a terrible thing to waste." What does this statement mean to you?
  • Personal. Describe your experience with education throughout high school. What were your high points and low points?
  • Lessons. Why exactly do you think education is important?
  • Benefits. Do you think you could have a successful future without an education? Why or why not?
  • Closing. What life do you expect to have because you received an education? What future do you envision?

 

Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA; must submit school transcript when applicable.

 

Some Advice:

  • Try to restate the questions in your response.
  • Remember posture is important.
  • Record your video with appropriate lighting using a neutral background.
  • Pick a quiet area.
  • Dress appropriate.
  • Your final submission should be free of grammatical errors.
