The Miller Family  Memorial Scholarship

Arlene Miller and her sons, Mulgrew and Albert, were people of honor, integrity and great character. In 2013, the world lost Mulgrew, a highly acclaimed jazz pianist who toured the world to share his love of jazz music. Then in 2014, the world lost Albert, a well-respected and enterprising business executive who also had a love for music. A day after Albert's transition, the boys came and welcomed into heaven their mother, Arlene, who was the epitome of compassion and strength. To honor these beloved family members, we have created the Miller Family Memorial Scholarship.

The Millers are strong advocates of education and believe in a "no excuses" attitude when working toward reaching goals and striving for success. This belief applies to acceptances into college, that financial strains should not be an excuse as to why students do not attend. Thus, the creation of the Miller Family Memorial Scholarship Fund, open to students who meet the requirements laid out below.

Application Requirements:

Applicants will be required to submit a 2-4 minute video presentation answering the following question.

Tell about a time when you were driven by your passion and succeeded.

Please include the following in your response:

  • Introduction. Tell us your name, where you are from, your current high school, and where you plan to attend college.
  • Response. Tell about a time when you were driven by your passion and succeeded.
  • Personal. What are you passionate about? A cause? A sport? Music?
  • Lessons. What were obstacles you faced that your passion motivated you to conquer?
  • Benefits. Why do you think it's important to be passionate about everything you do?
  • Closing. How will your passion continue to drive you toward greatness in the future?

Applicants must have a 2.5 GPA; must submit school transcript when applicable.

Some Advice:

  • Try to restate the questions in your response.
  • Remember posture is important.
  • Record your video with appropriate lighting using a neutral background.
  • Pick a quiet area.
  • Dress appropriately.
  • Your final submission should be free of grammatical errors.
